Benefits of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is generally associated with the absorption of calcium, an essential mineral for the formation of strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, which means the vitamin is stored in fat tissue for your body to use later.

Besides absorption of calcium, Vitamin D is also a great booster for the immune system. It helps reduce the chance of getting heart disease, help our cells grow, and reduces the chances of getting multiple sclerosis and other severe illnesses. Studies have found that it may also help enhance mood and reduce the symptoms or likelihood of depression. Scientists are also looking into possible weight-loss properties.

When sunlight hits our skin, it activates Vitamin D. So, you’ll want to expose your skin to the sun a few times a week.

While vitamin D is in some foods such as fortified yogurt or plant-based milk, it is only found in small amounts. Doctors advise you to have regular checks to know your levels, get out in the sun and take supplements if necessary.
