3 Health Benefits of Elderberry

Elderberry is the dark purple berry that originates from the Sambucus nigra, which is the most common European elder tree. Historically speaking, elderberry has been used to help relieve pain, swelling, inflammation, and more. Today, many take elderberry as a supplement to boost their immune system and overcome various illnesses. Here are three health benefits of taking elderberry.

1. Elderberries are highly nutritious.

One cup of elderberries contains about 100 calories, 26.7 grams of carbs, and less than 1 gram each of fat and protein. They are high in vitamin C, dietary fiber, and they are a good source of flavonols and phenolic acids. This makes elderberries a nourishing staple in one’s overall diet.

2. Elderberries may help improve cold and flu-like symptoms.

Studies have shown that black elderberry extracts and flower infusions can help reduce the length and severity of illnesses like influenza. From this study, it was seen that those who took 15 mL of elderberry syrup four times a day showed improvement in their symptoms in 2 to 4 days, while those who did not took 7 to 8 days to improve.

3. Elderberries could help improve heart health and lower the risk of diabetes.

Due to elderberries being rich in three types of flavanols (which are naturally occurring compounds in plants with antioxidant properties), they may help with improving one’s heart health. Some research has shown that eating elderberries can help reduce fat levels in the blood, improve blood sugar levels, and lower cholesterol.

While elderberries can be a great addition to a healthy diet due to its nutritious value, you should always consult with your doctor before modifying your diet or adding a supplement to your daily regimen.
